Asian Studies in Australia

Colin Mackerras

Abstract

This commentary briefly discusses the approaches and strategies that have been attempted to increase the teaching of Asian languages and cultures in Australian schools. While it sees some positive initiatives and achievements, it finds them much too half-hearted at government and many other levels. It also suggests the initiatives focus too heavily on studying Asian languages and cultures for the purposes of Australian economic gain, the instrumentalist approach, rather than genuine interest in them for their own sake.
